PAULA M. MILLER

INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER

I am an instructional designer and education specialist. My skillset includes videography, web design, graphic design, and content strategy. My instructional design work is informed by over a decade of hands-on eLearning and classroom teaching experience.

learning by design

The best educators are perpetual learners. Using design thinking, I thrive on the challenges associated with crafting learning solutions for learners in a variety of settings. I enjoy diving into a new project and learning new technologies that make it happen, whatever it may be.

Video Production

An effective video tells a story, whether it’s an advertisement for a web firm or a lesson for an online course. My video production skills include storyboarding, script writing, camera and audio work, editing, and graphic design. Take a look at some of the visual stories I’ve created.

Content Creation

Professional writing starts with relationships – with subject matter experts, with clients, and with the broader team. The strongest content springs from a clear understanding of client need, client goals, and audience. Check out some the content I’ve created.

Visual Design

Good design starts with good thinking and understanding of learner personas and an eye toward the end goal. Explore some of my graphic design projects, created for both web and print.

Resume

I have a wide range of experience spanning academic and corporate environments. Review my resume to get a sense of what I’ve done.

Video PRODUCTION

AN EDUCATOR
WITH A BUSINESS MINDSET

In addition to my educational work, I apply my skills in a variety of practical settings. The video above is a promotional video I created for a small business owner.

01

On Storytelling - Digital Lesson

This video on visual storytelling was produced as a digital lesson for students in my video production course at Ohio State. I used a playful, authentic tone in this lesson to mimic tone for social media. Note in particular time marker 7:05, where I demonstrate some of the behind the scenes equipment challenges, and time marker 8:27, where I use a wardrobe malfunction caught in editing as a teachable moment.

Promo - Professional Writing Minor

The client for this project was the newly hired director of The Minor in Professional Writing at Ohio State. I used the client’s existing script for this project. The challenge with this project was coaching a client to feel confident on camera.

She took a formal approach when producing her script, so when I edited the video, I chose retro-style graphic and audio assets to match her tone.

03

Welcome Home - Personal Project

The first winter in our new house, as we were packing to travel to see family, I decided to whip up a quick video tour for our relatives featuring our cats.

This project demonstrates my ability to consider narrative, even on a low stakes project, and tell a story with video that evokes an emotional experience.

CONTENt creation

AN Audience First Approach To Content Creation

In the past, I’ve been a university instructor – teaching a variety of digital rhetoric and business writing classes, and a writing center director – strategizing educational initiatives to support content creation education. My experiences are broad, ranging from instructional design to project management, administration, and teaching.

The most important lesson I’ve learned from my multitude of experiences is that every project requires considering the audience and how best to reach them.

Curated Selections

Good design focuses on the user’s needs. Here are a few examples of visual design projects I have created.

01

Learning Library - Sharepoint Site

This learning library is a user-friendly collection of resources to help actuaries document models more efficiently.

Note that the headings on the left side of the page coincide with the questions I anticipated actuaries asking about documentation based on my work with them.

02

Testimonial Menu - Sharepoint Site

This eye-catching menu was designed to promote the Advisory Services offered by the Model Risk department at Nationwide.

The department requested an engaging way to display testimonials that invited user interaction.

but don’t just take my word for it

Here are a few things clients and collaborators have said about working with me.

“Paula was the lead UX developer, web designer, and video editor for the OSU Writing MOOC. Her work was efficient, clean, and thoughtfully designed. She ensured consistent branding and style across all videos and was a pleasure to work with.”

Scott Lloyd DeWitt

Associate Professor of English, Writing and Digital Media Studies, The Ohio State University

Paula was professional, reliable, and prompt in managing an intense and sometimes unpredictable workload. Students raved to me about how helpful and clear her feedback was. She even added her own tools to help clarify complex feedback, and students had better outcomes with this than they would have with just our standard program procedures.

Dr. Lindsay Martin

Coordinator of the Minor in Professional Writing, The Ohio State University

Applying for multiple jobs over time, I have been faced with confusing application requirements. Working with Paula Miller made the process easier, providing thoughtful consultation and being conscious of how each job for which I returned to her with was different for how I presented myself

Bart Sullivan

Catalog Librarian, Cuyahoga Falls Library

“Paula took my original idea for a video and improved it incredibly. She  provided a different and more interesting perspective and sourced the assets from repositories I was unaware of. It was great to work with her on this video and  the initial brainstorm sessions.”

John Arcadian

Owner, Bee Zen Web Design
